Deftones - To Have and to Hold

It is destined to be...
...Like Nostradamus foreseeing the future of rock concert scene in Singapore and Manila!

After seeing their tour list on their website last October that Deftones will have an Australian tour and Perth is the last city in February 2011, it was strategically correct that there is a big chance that they are going to push for an Asian tour. I posted on twitter and FB that “I smell Deftones live in Manila in February 2011!”

I have suggested the possibility of bringing Deftones here in Manila to few organizers and one of them answered my prayers: Splintr.com, the same group who bravely brought the 90’s Premiere Industrial Rock Band Nine Inch Nails here in Manila. Bringing Deftones to Manila is the biggest follow up concert indeed from NIN.

And LAMC Productions will also bring Deftones in Singapore on February 16, 2011. I imagine this event as a gigantic fire cracker from the recent Chinese New Year to hit Singapore!!! (Really hoping to see both concerts!)

Deftones will definitely conquer unchartered territories where Slipknot and Korn cowardly backed out few years ago. Comprised of Chino Moreno on vocals, Chi Cheng on bass, Stephen Carpenter on guitars, Abe Cunningham on drums and Frank Delgado on samples/keyboards.

Being the most relevant band from the Nu-Metal era, Deftones came out from its rap metal shell and explored other music genre album after album. “Adrenaline” was their 1st album which brought us songs “Root” and “7 Words.” You can even ask members of Manila band Greyhoundz how Deftones influenced them.

Their sophomore effort, “Around the Fur” showcased more their love of punk/metal/ and “Helmet”-dynamic approach. And of course, it was their break through album. MTV loved “My Own Summer” and it got heavy airplay. “Be Quiet and Drive” made them stay for good on the charts. Title track “Around the Fur” sums up the album. And having Max Cavaliera (of Sepultura and Soulfly fame) as guest vocalist for the song “Head up” made it more nastier fun.

For most critics (me included), their 3rd album “White Pony” was the band’s masterpiece. It was not a 360 degree turn from their sound but they had a fresh approach, incorporating more samples plus making DJ Frank Delgado an official member. They injected electronic beats, more melodic progressions and created more atmosphere.  James Maynard Keenan provided guest vocals in intense song “Passenger.” “Change in the House of Flies” provided melodramatic mood to the album. “Digital Bath” gave an emotional build up and drum beats that could kill. Knife Party gave us an operatic vocals and personal favorite, Chino having forgettable tendencies in “Street Carp.” Re releasing the album with the song Mini Maggit Back to School gave them more street-cred and appeal to the young generation.
Then they released their self titled album, “Deftones” last 2003. It contained the epic “Minerva” and the apocalyptic “Wrath.” It became apparent that they were going to another musical dimension. “Hexagram” and “Battle Axe” showcased heaviness of the album.

Saturday Night Wrist, their follow up to the self titled album made them more commercially intact and provided radio friendly songs like, “Hole in the Earth” and “Cherry Waves”. “Mein,” with its upbeat approach, with its cool hiphop video plus sharing vocal duties with Serj Tankian had made it an instant Deftones classic.

“B Sides and Rarities” made them the best 80’s cover band that I ever known. This compilation showcases their vast influence of music. Covering Cocteau Twin’s “Wax and Wayne”, The Smiths’ “Please, please, please let me get what I want,” The Cure’s “A Forrest”, Sade “No Ordinary Love,” we can certainly say that Deftones are really new wave kids.

Last year, they have release “Diamond Eyes” their most ambitious album yet, in which they dedicated the album to their very own bassist Chi Cheng, whom is still in therapy, recovering from a car accident. They hired Sergio Vega as session bassist for the album and tour. They have already released songs such as the title track, “Diamond Eyes”, "Sex Tape",and the off beat, bloody hell “You've Seen the Butcher.”

Their unreleased album “Eros” will see the daylight soon, after of course, Chi Cheng's recovery...

I am really excited to watch this concert, considering 13 years ago, I imagined watching them live.

So boys and girls, are you prepared for the most Awesome rock concert to jumpstart the year?!! Shove it!!
