Death Cab For Cutie - Live in Manila!!!

So all the trendy boys and girls cannot wait for Death Cab for Cutie's concert tomorrow at NBC Tent in the Fort Taguig!

DCFC is presently composed of Benjamin Gibbard (vocals, guitar, piano, bass, drums),
Nick Harmer (bass, keyboards, guitar), Chris Walla (guitar, production, piano, vocals)
Jason McGerr (drums). The band started in the year 1997 as a solo project of Benjamin Gibbard.

I was able to discover DCFC since 2001 when I was a frequently visit Tower Records in Makati. The band's name and cover art on their “We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes” LP got my attention. So I said to myself, who will name their band as Death Cab for Cutie? Opposite extreme uses of words: Death and Cute. Have it played on the record bar and find the songs “feel good” for an indie band. Few years later, I heard one of their first single “New Year” from the album “Transatlanticism.” I was able to label their music as sad genius and mellow but melodic compared to more emo music of Dashboard Confessional and sad angry songs of Sparta. Sometimes I compared their music to Jimmy Eat World.

DCFC was lost in my playlist because I was exposed to shoegaze 90’s music but I got hooked up with Ben Gibbard's other side project: The Postal Service.
The lo fi techno approach somewhat clicked and I was an instant fan. Their cover of Phil Collin's “Against All Odds” was excellent!

In 2005 the album “Plans” came out. “Soul Meets Body” was an instant classic tune from them. The intro build up was awesome. I immediately bought the album. “I Will Follow You in The Dark” was just plain and beautiful.

Then in one bored afternoon of 2008, I was watching Channel V and they played the long version of “I Will Possess Your Heart.” I said, wow! When will Ben sing? Will he really sing or this song is just a pure instrumental jam? So Ben indeed sang before 5 minutes of an 8 minute song. Whoa! This is something cool and new for DCFC. The video is also somewhat intense and has this cool cinematography. So I checked that they have a new album: Narrow Stairs.

The next single is “Grapevine Fires.” The accompanying video of losing someone you love from a forest fire is really heart-breaking.

I remember watching them being nominated at Grammy awards and while being interviewed at the red carpet, they condemned the usage of Auto Tune by most musicians which I believe is a great statement.

Their last song from the Soundtrack of the Twilight New Moon Saga: “Meet me on the Equinox” was a sure-fire hit, winning them more audience from the teeny bopper population. Actually the song was really damn catchy with the memorable line: “Everything ends.”

A trivia for you guys that Benjamin Gibbard's ex-wife was Zooey Deschanel of the “500 Days of Summer” and “New Girl” Series Fame. They married last 2008 and just got divorced last December 2011. I know these kinds of events may spark some new inspiration for a new album in the future.

And the band released their new album last year: Codes and Keys. The first single from the album is “You are A Tourist.”

So in the early days of January 2012, I was quite amazed of so many international bands coming to Manila that would rip my wallet and my pockets off, and the announcement of Death Cab for Cutie's concert in Manila just blew my mind away!!! I was very excited for this event, considering that the venue is NBC tent and will be a very intimate night for all DCFC fans.
