Morrissey Tribute Night @ Saguijo 1 / 7 / 2010

Saguijo Bar, Makati. 1/07/10. It was a memorable night for Morrissey and Smiths fans! I brought along the president of the Morrissey fans club in the gig (Take A Bow mos! hehehe) straight from his work and we were 1.25 hours early! The bar was quite empty! But around past 10 PM, people were going inside the bar, mostly groupies of the bands performing that night. The Gentle Isolation opened the night. Kate Torralba performed "Girlfriend in a Coma" and The Cure's Lovesong (It was a Morrissey/Smiths night and we dunno why she had this on her list). Then the unimaginable happened. Kate brought DJ Eva Kokoschka of Paris and delivered non-Morrissey; non-Smiths electro dance music on the floor! That prompted the next act, The Bernadettes, to perform "Panic" with the singer and the crowd sang in gusto: "hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ!" hahaha...plus covering also "International Playboy."
Then I rediscovered a band: Turbo Goth! Vocalist Sarah Gaugler and his cool guitarist Pao Peralta

was twee as pop but loud at the same time! I saw them in their starting days early last year. This was the second time I was able to watch and internalize them. Besides covering sunny sunshine versions of the Smiths' "There is a light that never goes out" and "This Charming Man" they also covered The White Stripes' Blue Orchid and The Rapture's House of Jealous Lovers (I loved those songs in college). Then the princess of Philippine trip hop was reborn that night: Lally Buendia AKA Domino. As the sister of the Philippine Paul McCartney, Ely Buendia, she delivered her post-Portishead persona with songs from her debut album "Fair Tales' and did cover "Everyday is Like Sunday" and "Last night I dreamt that Somebody Loved me." And the climax of the night, Morrissey jingoistic Camerawalls led by former Orange and Lemons Clem Castro brought the house down, literally. They dished out great Moz stuffs like "Suedehead," " Interesting Drug" and "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now ."

The show was over around 3AM. Bought Camerawall's album and ate our hearts out with the cheapest tapsilog in town located parallel to Guijo St. for only P35!!!

This gig I and Mos anticipated 6-7 years ago and came into fruition. I was 32 hours awake for this event for goodness sake! I really mean for "goodness sake"! Viva Hate!!! Ü
